News – Today’s Roundup 30/09/09

by Cosmo on Oct.01, 2009, under Gaming News

Another ton of news today.. from an anniversary version launch of Homeworld to the new-age Onlive system to Deadspace 2. All that and more after the jump.

Homeworld Raider Retreat standalone demo

Homeworld was one of the giant games of times gone past. The scale of battles and the stress of combat have set a high standard for future RTSes, both real or sci-fi to match. For the people that missed out on it, Relic gives you a version of Homeworld as a demo that you can use to skirmish at will with your friends, or try out some of the singleplayer missions it comes with. Also, i point you to the “No Comment” at the end of the interview, which pretty much tells us that a new Homeworld is deep in development.

Onlive CEO offers details on future service

Onlive is based on a ’semi’-revolutionary ideea of providing a high quality through a web interface. The ability to play Crysis at max details on an age-old laptop is definetly not something to scoff at. While not being the only one seizing this future new market, it’s by far the most hyped one.  All similar services are at the moment in closed beta, and they havent gotten into the wild yet. The promise of lag-free gaming on a variety of connections i find absolutely mindblowing. The ideea is that the game runs on a server and you interact via a browser with it. The result is sent back as a video feed and as such, you are ‘playing’ remotely. The problem is that due to lag and compression/buffer issues, you end up with very poor response time. Onlive is bragging that some new technology they developed in the 7 years it took to start it up will offer us lag-free cloud-gaming. I’m going with the rest of the internet on this.. ‘i’ll believe it when i see it’.

More Dragon Age Origins movies and trailers.

Too much is too much. And considering we still have a whole month ahead.. i can only imagine how many more videos will pop up.  Anyhow, enjoy more high quality voice acting and animations.

Risen launch trailer

Risen just got out on the mass market and it’s making some nice impressions.. On me included. The devs gave us this nice Launch trailer to celebrate… well.. Launch. Just the game, it’s worth it. The review is coming up in a week or so.

Be prepared for more limb-cutting in Deadspace 2

Deadspace 1 didn’t exactly get the numbers they were expecting, and the ‘wide net’ they threw with comics/movies/etc dident pay off as much as they thought it would. Still.. they made a buttload of cash, and as such, Deadspace 2 is now in preproduction. We’re awaiting it with open arms and Plasma Torches loaded.
