Review – Borderlands

Big game hunter just got a whole new meaning.

Big game hunter just got a whole new meaning.

While co-op does not necessarily remove the initial problems, it adds it’s own pair of them. The biggest is that it relies too much on actually having good friends playing, and not assholes. This issue arrises because while money and ammo are shared, items are not. So if you’re playing with certain types of people, they just can’t help themselves and pick up all the loot. This grows even more problematic if you’re playing the same class, as they usually use the same weapons and use the same ammo.

Secondly, although you can start a duel anytime with a friend by melleing them, there is no real satisfaction involved, since as soon as they reach zero health, the game puts them up to 25% hp and declares you the winner. Also, while the game features arenas that allow 2vs2’s, these fail to actually make up for having a good PvP system. I know i’m asking for a lot, but if they have duels and 2vs2’s in, i think they could have went a bit further and allow more types of matches, with a higher number of players.

I know i’ve bashed the game in by now, but i feel i have to redeem it a bit. The game is not bad, people. It’s polished, it offers good solid gameplay and is three times lengthier then most games today. It’s entertaining, even with all it’s small flaws, since they are just that, small flaws and the world of Pandora is large and nicely crafted and rewards players poking all over the place. The combat is satisfying, though a tad repetitive and easy sometimes and as said, with friends it’s a blast.

So in the end, is Borderlands worth it? I’m on the fence with that one, but i’m a little inclined towards saying ”Yes”. For one thing, it’s entertaining enough killing enemies and picking up loot so it makes you fallow through and finish it, maybe even a second playthrough if you have friends commited to it. But on the other side, there is no real reward at the end of the rainbow, and you end up with the same hallow feeling that you do when you hit the levelcap in most MMORPGs. Just that Borderlands has no endgame content to keep you entertained after it’s all done.

So to seal it up, should you buy it? I think you should, the game is nice and is worth your time atleast, but don’t go in expecting a truely great game.

Solid review. I definitely agree with what you’re saying. The desire for a better gun is what keeps me playing, because I’ve gotten over the fact that there won’t be many surprising twists to the game.

I agree, sometimes i find a gun that’s just TOO good and end up having a good couple of hours without any upgrade. Still, the game’s nice like that. :)

Reminds me of Fallout 3 where I used to constantly look for a better gun but ended up playing a few days with the same laser pistol even when I picked up some better stuff. A lot of games don’t have that balanced out in my opinion.
Played more than 50% of Torchlight with the same staff … kinda lame.
