Review – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2

by Cosmo on Nov.19, 2009, under Game Reviews

This is not gonna end well.

This is not gonna end well.

Modern Warfare 2 brings to the table a lot more customization options and a lot more diversity then its predecessor, all based around unlocking them. First are the emblems and the titles. Each player can have one of each, which are unlockable after doing certain challenges or completing certain requirements, which you don’t know until you’ve achieved them. The titles themselves are diverse enough so that anyone can have a favorite. From the “Companion Crate” title to the “Get Real” one, you can be certain MW2 has something for everyone. Of course the more elitistic people will just use the most hard to get ones  for the pure renown value as a social status.

Perks have been ‘perked up’ to the new gameplay and also gotten ‘pro’ versions of them which of course have to be unlocked. The Ninja perk for example while initially only making you invisibile to thermal vision, after being upgraded to pro will also offer the ability to not make footstep sounds while running. The Pro versions are pretty easily achieved but it adds another layer to tailor to whatever you like to play.

Joining perks in the realm of upgrade heaven we have Killstreaks. While in the initial CoD4 we had an UAV at 3 consecutive kills, airstrike at 5 and chopper at 7, in Modern Warfare 2 we can select from a huge amount of abilities which to take with us on the field and how hard do we want to work for them. You can now choose from the UAV requiring the same 3 kills to the nuke which needs a whooping 25 consecutive kills. This has a pretty big impact on gameplay in both normal mode and hardcore, making having anti-air extremely important sometimes.

And to top it all off we have Death Streaks. It happens even to the best of us, sometimes, you get that 4-5 deaths in a row where you have no idea why you got stuck into a ‘you suck’ phase. Well, Infinity Ward gives you Death Streaks, after dying a certain amount of times in  a row without a  kill you can receive some powerups. They are four in number and each deals with ‘loss’ differently. One even allows you to steal your enemies loadout during the kill-cam, and see if that evens the playing field.

Now you might think.. “well, this all sounds pretty awesome, i mean, a lot more of everything more diverse playing styles and generally a damned good time, what’s not to like?”.

Amazingly, while Infinity Ward did a great job enhancing the experience, taking the series a step forward in multiplayer terms, they  stumbled a bit as they did with the single-player. For the PC version, they took out dedicated servers, which basically takes away modding privileges, disallows having ‘Clan-servers’, and introducing a matchmaking system instead.

Haha. So that was it. FEAR.

While I was in that part, I kept getting a feeling that that place was familiar. But I couldn’t put my finger on it.
