Review – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2

I’m gonna be impartial here and just explain from my point of view what i like and did not like about these changes. This will not be the type of shitty rant that has invaded the Internet since the above was announced or a fanboi cheer.
Firstly, IWNet integrates with Steam which i think is a good thing since i think Steam is great but some people just don’t want to use an additional software to be able to play their game, and i agree with that. This also means that if the Steam network is down, and it happens sometimes, you will lose the ability to play the game online. So we’re in the game, we click “Find game” and are presented with a number of options for gametypes. You have all the normal mode options from CoD4 plus Demolition which i noticed which is a respawnable S&D. For Hardcore mode you only have Team Deathmatch and S&D, so if you wanted to play Hardcore Headquarters (my favorite game mode btw) then you’re out of luck. You also can choose some new 3rd person gametypes, but i rarely manage to find enough people interested to actually form a lobby to play it, plus as far as i’ve played and seen, it handles crappy anyways.
So we chose a game and now we’re looking for other people to play with. The game searches via a filter of increasing pings and supposedly, matchmaking you with people of your skill level. Personally i managed to get a minimum of 50-60 ping, as in, instantly-enter, and at worst some 120 in joining games that were already started. Once the lobby is formed, if the game is not started yet, then a host will be chosen. I don’t know why, but most of the time i got chosen as host, and with this, we reach another problem. Host advantage. Being the host can sometimes grant you a big bonus over people playing with even 60-80 ping, and as such, provide a very uneven game for all involved. With people hosting servers, the maximum number of players in gametypes have been limited, and the max is 18 players, 9vs9, even though the maps now are a lot bigger then CoD4’s. The bigger maps also disable a lot of the grenade spamming, and i haven’t really seen it in MW2, though noob-tubers/grenade-launcher-only players still exist. Personally i like the smaller number of players since 30 players servers on Crossfire in CoD4 were pure clusterfucks. The game now has a bit of tactics to it rather then knee-jerk shooting all the time.
The problem with not having dedicated servers, atleast from my perspective, is that there is no possibility of meeting new people and having fun with them. It’s nice joining a server where you know the people that frequent it and you get to know them and it generally makes it more fun to knife-kill that smack-talking, but pretty fun guy, ”JoeBiggins” rather than another random screen-name which you will probably never see. Also clans cannot really recruit like this, since they usually invite people they repeatedly see as being good at the game, not 5 minute wonders.
