Editorial – Top Ten PC Games of 2009

#7 – Red Faction: Guerrilla
Finally, Red Faction: Guerrilla on a top X games of 2009 list. I really have no idea why it didn’t atleast get a mention, since i personally had a nice deal of fun with the game. The building-destroying mechanic was top-notch, though exaggerated during the story mode, for balancing purposes most likely, but it still managed to be entertaining. I chalk this game up in the same category as Mercenaries 2, “just bloody fun”. Sure, it could have used a better story and maybe a bit more ‘oomph’ to the experience, and that’s why it’s just coming it at number seven.
#6 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Some people even challenge Modern Warfare’s addition on any kind of ‘top’ list, but i’ve made it clear i did not judge the game on fanboy cheer/queer, but on its merits. I won’t go over the specifics here, but if you still feel i’m doing a huge mistake, read my review on the game to get a taste of how i treated it. Long story short, does what it’s supposed to, nice experience, could have been more. As such, sixth place goes to CoD4:MW2.
#5 – Risen
Classic Piranha Bytes RPG, featuring an open world with a lovely touch of life to it. Risen follows closely in the ’spiritual shoes’ of the Gothic series upping everything that was good in its predecessor in order to make it one of the best RPGs of this year. A decent story and a nice overall character development overshadows the overall poor combat mechanic and the overall difficulty of the game. Still, those are there, so that’s why the game only scores a five on my list.
#4 – Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
Burnout Paradise is a type of game that i don’t usually play past the “just to check it out” phase. I’m glad i did though, because i was treated to one of the best arcade car sim i ever played. It goes in the same category as i’ve mentioned before, the “it’s just fun” category. Driving down a mountainside, flipping over six times, crashing on your wheels, then pushing full throttle and jumping three bridges while scraping paint off of guide-rails was never as much fun, or possible to this extent, until Burnout Paradise. I really enjoyed my time in it and it was done superbly well. Still, the only way it would rank higher on this list is if had that ’something else’ that i keep looking for in games. Was it fun? Sure. Really memorable? No exactly. As such, it places fourth on my list.
